Woodworking joints: which one, and when

The right joint depends on the load, the look you want, and your tools. For most hobby projects, three joints cover almost everything: pocket screws for frames and cases, dados for shelves, and mortise-and-tenon for anything that racks.

In short: use pocket screws or dowels for face frames, boxes, and simple tables; dado and rabbet joints for shelving and casework; mortise-and-tenon for chairs, tables, and doors that take side loads; and dovetails or box joints for drawers and show casework. Strength usually matters more than tradition.

The joints, by job

Butt joint (glue + screws or nails)

Use it for: quick boxes, shop furniture, backing frames. Weakest of the joints because it is mostly end-grain glue surface; reinforce with screws, pocket screws, or a fastener. Fast and needs no special tools.

Pocket-hole joint

Use it for: face frames, cabinet carcases, simple table aprons, shelving. An angled screw pulls two parts tight over a glued butt joint. Strong enough for most furniture, very beginner-friendly, needs an inexpensive jig. Visible holes go on hidden faces.

Dowel joint

Use it for: casework, edge-to-edge panels, aprons. Aligning pins in drilled holes; clean look, no visible fasteners, good alignment. Needs accurate hole placement (a jig or a doweling machine).

Dado and rabbet

Use it for: bookshelves, cabinets, drawer bottoms, case backs. A groove (dado) or a step (rabbet) captures a shelf or panel, so the joint carries load and self-aligns during glue-up. Cut with a router or table saw.

Mortise-and-tenon

Use it for: chairs, tables, workbenches, doors, anything that gets pushed sideways. A tongue (tenon) fits a matching hole (mortise) for a large long-grain glue surface and mechanical strength. The durable choice; more skill or a jig.

Box joint (finger joint)

Use it for: boxes, drawers, small casework. Interlocking square fingers, lots of glue surface, strong and quick to cut with a table-saw jig. Looks deliberate rather than fine.

Dovetail joint

Use it for: drawer fronts, fine casework, jewellery boxes. Wedge-shaped pins and tails that mechanically lock in one direction. Strongest-looking traditional joint; a hand skill or a router jig.

How to choose in practice

  • Will it get side loads? (chair, table, door) → mortise-and-tenon.
  • Is it a shelf or a captured panel? → dado or rabbet.
  • Is it a frame or a simple box on a budget of tools? → pocket screws or dowels.
  • Does the joint show and you want it to look intentional? → box joint or dovetail.

What is the strongest woodworking joint?

For parts that take side loads, a well-fitted mortise-and-tenon is the strongest common joint. Dovetails are strongest in tension for drawers.

What joint should a beginner start with?

Pocket-hole joinery. It is strong enough for most furniture, needs only a cheap jig and a drill, and is very forgiving.

Do I need special tools for woodworking joints?

Not to start. Butt joints and pocket holes need only a drill. Dados and box joints want a router or table saw. Mortise-and-tenon and dovetails are easier with a jig.

When should I use a pocket-hole joint?

Face frames, cabinet carcases, simple table aprons, and shelving, where the holes can face a hidden side.

When should I use a dado or rabbet?

Bookshelves, cabinets, drawer bottoms, and case backs, where a groove or step captures and aligns a panel.

What is a mortise-and-tenon joint for?

Are dovetails worth learning?

Can I substitute an easier joint for one a plan specifies?

For non-racking parts, pocket screws or dowels usually stand in fine. Keep mortise-and-tenon where the plan calls for it on a chair or table base.

What glue is best for joints?

A standard PVA wood glue for most joinery, and a waterproof type for anything used outdoors.

Why do my joints have gaps?

Usually marking from the wrong reference, or cutting on the line rather than to the waste side. Mark with a knife, cut proud, and trim.
