A coffee table is a manageable furniture project and a good step up from shelving. The two things that make or break it are a base that does not wobble and a top attached so it can expand and contract.
What to expect
Expect a base assembly (legs plus aprons or a trestle), a top glue-up, and a finish. Accuracy matters most in leg length and the apron shoulders that keep the frame square.
What a good coffee table plan plan includes
- A cut list with leg and apron sizes, plus board-feet for the top
- Base joinery rated for racking loads - mortise-and-tenon or heavy dowels, not just screws
- A top-attachment method that allows movement: clips, buttons, or slotted screws
